Absolutely! We offer an “Aquaseal” flue outlet compatible with various flue sizes. Typically, it is installed in the roof cover, approximately 600mm from the wall. However, it can also be fitted through the wall. You can choose the desired position around the wall for its placement. One of the best fireplace options available is the Pyro Classic heater. These wood-burning fireplaces are known for their exceptional efficiency and clean burning capabilities. With an industry-leading efficiency, they can achieve a 12-hour burn time.
Yes, we offer complete insulation kits for yurts that can help keep you warm and cozy even in cold weather. Our insulation kits contain a Terra Lana actual sheep woollen insulation layer lined inside with fully treated 10oz canvas. The insulation and liner are fitted between the frame and the outer cover, with the framework still visible inside. This provides an effective barrier against the cold and helps retain heat inside the yurt.
The R-value of our insulation is R2.9 for the walls and the roof. These values indicate the thermal resistance of the insulation material, with higher values indicating better insulation properties. With our insulation kits, you can enjoy a well-insulated yurt that can help maintain a comfortable temperature inside, even in chilly conditions.
We can provide customized solutions if you require higher R-value insulation. Please get in touch with us directly to discuss your requirements.
Once your platform is in place, you should allow about three days to set up a fully-sized yurt, including insulation. It is crucial to have a stable platform or scaffolding in place to install the hub and rafters.
Setting up a Yurt is a straightforward process. Here are the general steps involved:
1. Platform Preparation
It's essential to have a stable platform and scaffolding in place before setting up the yurt. This provides a solid foundation for the yurt and ensures proper installation of the hub and rafters. Make sure the Platform is perfectly round and has the exact dimensions as specified for your yurt.
2. Location Determination
Decide on the location(s) of the door(s) and install the door frames accordingly.
3. Lattice Wall Erection
Erect the lattice wall, which forms the circular structure of the yurt and fix it to the door(s) and platform.
4. Tension Cable Installation
Install the tension cable to provide additional support and stability to the yurt structure.
5. Hub and Rafters Placement
Bring the hub and rafters into place, connecting them to form the roof structure.
6. Inner Lining, Insulation and Roof Installation
Lay the inner lining, insulation, and PVC roof to complete the assembly.
7. Wall Assembly
Repeat the process for the walls, including installing inner lining, insulation, and PVC material.
Please note that the time required for pitching a yurt may vary depending on factors such as experience level, weather conditions, and the size of the yurt. It is always recommended to allocate sufficient time and ensure proper planning for a successful setup.
Yes, you can. Our yurts are designed to withstand winds up to 235 Kph, thanks to the strong materials and the compression ring that keep the roof and rafters in place. Yurts are a ‘soft’ structure, which means they can adjust to the weather conditions better than ‘rigid’ structures. However, you still need to choose your site carefully and consider the wind direction, the overhead branches, the water runoff, and other factors. The best site would be protected from the wind, has morning sun and afternoon shade, and has no large dead branches that could damage the yurt in a storm. You should also position your entrance so the door does not face the wind.
When choosing a yurt site, there are several factors to consider.
Some of these factors include:
1. Accessibility:
Ensure the site is easily accessible for you and your guests. Consider factors such as road access, parking availability, and proximity to amenities.
2. Safety:
Choose a safe and secure site. Consider factors such as the stability of the ground, potential hazards (e.g., falling trees), and the risk of flooding or other natural disasters.
3. Cellphone and Internet Service:
Check the availability of cellphone and internet service at the site. This is especially important if you rely on these services for communication or work.
4. Climate:
Consider the area where you plan to set up your yurt. Consider factors such as temperature extremes, precipitation levels, wind patterns, and sun hours. You may need to take additional measures to ensure comfort and protection from the elements.
5. Views:
If you value scenic views, choose a site with beautiful surroundings. Remember that altering the landscape (e.g., cutting down trees) may impact your site's microclimate.
6. Utilities:
If you require water, electricity, or propane, ensure they are available at your chosen site. If you are off-grid, plan for alternative resources.
7. Privacy:
Consider and balance your privacy needs with convenience. Remember that remote locations may require additional maintenance and can pose challenges regarding emergency service access.
8. Platform and Decking:
Evaluate the site's suitability for constructing a platform or additional decking. Flat sites are generally easier to work with, but you may need to consider soil type and drainage factors.
9. Wind Exposure:
If you plan to set up your yurt in an area with high winds, choose a sheltered site if possible.
Take into account the wind direction, the overhead branches, the water runoff, and other factors. The best site would be one that is protected from the wind, has morning sun and afternoon shade, and has no large dead branches that could damage the yurt in a storm. You should also position your entrance so the door does not face the prevailing wind.
These are just a few factors to consider when choosing a yurt site. It's important to carefully evaluate your specific needs and preferences before making a decision.

The answer to this question depends on several factors, such as your yurt's size, purpose, location, and duration. In general, most building work in New Zealand requires building consent, which is permission to build from your local council. However, buildings under 30 square meters and some low-risk building work, such as tents, stalls, marquees, and booths under 100 square metres in size and in place for no longer than a month, are exempt from needing building consent.
If you plan to use your yurt as a permanent or semi-permanent dwelling, studio, office, or commercial space, you will likely need building consent. You will also need to comply with the Building Code, which sets the standards for building design, construction, and maintenance. The Building Code covers aspects such as structure, durability, moisture control, light, ventilation, insulation, and more.
To apply for a building consent, you must submit an 'Alternative Solutions' document detailing how your yurt meets the performance criteria of the Building Code. We can provide supporting paperwork and drafted plans for your yurt, but you will need to consult with your local council or an agent to ensure that you meet your area's specific requirements. You can also find more information on the Building Performance website. Alternatively, we can bring you in contact with a local agent who can help you with the consenting process and has first-hand experience with consenting a yurt.
What are the new building code standards for insulation?
The H1 requirements are now quite high but only need to be complied with if you’re being supplied with electricity from your network utility operator.
If you’re off-grid and don’t use depletable
resources, H1 doesn’t apply, but insulation
would still be very worthwhile. The Building Code has recently been updated to require higher insulation levels for New Zealand buildings. The new standards aim to improve the energy efficiency, comfort, and health of buildings and their occupants. The minimum R-values, which measure the thermal resistance of insulation materials, have increased for different climate zones and building types. You can find the details of the new standards on the Building Performance website.
We are working on getting our yurts approved for the new building code insulation standards. Our standard option is 90mm thick woollen insulation, which is sufficient in most NZ climates. Currently, we work on a case-to-case basis to calculate the insulation requirements to meet the new building code. In both cases, we will use natural and sustainable materials that provide excellent thermal and acoustic insulation for your yurt.
How can I contact you if I am interested in getting my yurt consented?
If you want to get your yurt consented, we would love to hear from you. You can contact us by phone, email, or through our website. We can answer any questions you may have, provide you with a quote, and guide you through getting your yurt consented. We have years of experience and expertise in producing high-quality and durable yurts that suit various needs and preferences. We look forward to helping you make your yurt dream a reality.
Are there any risks of erecting a yurt without building consent?
Although plenty of yurts have been erected without building consent in New Zealand, this is not recommended or legal in most cases. Erecting a yurt without building consent may expose you to several risks, such as:
Therefore, we strongly advise you to obtain building consent for your yurt if it falls under the scope of the Building Act. This will ensure you can enjoy your yurt without worrying about legal consequences.
